Abstract

We wish to announce the formation of The World Population Societyl and issue an invitation to Charter Membership to readers of BioScience. Chartered in the District of Columbia in March 1973, this corporation is world interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary society to encourage study of the causes of population growth and its effect upon the quality of life. Recognizing the immense complexity of interactions between the biosphere, population, food supply, resources, industrial and urban environments, and economic, social, cultural, and political systems, the Society is founded to foster an interdisciplinary approach to meeting world human needs. The Society will further research and scholarship in all disciplines which provide new insight into determinants of population change and new promise of a rational, humane, and successful means of bringing harmony to the condition of man while preserving a worthy environment for the health and enjoyment of future generations.
