Abstract
This chapter takes a closer look at genuine Christian ideas and figures that were related in some respect to the world of war. It analyses the changes in Christian tradition that occurred in the course of the centuries under focus. The chapter examines the following questions: How far did Christianity actually adapt its conceptions to the contemporary world and its requirements? How far had Christian ideas militarised by the end of the Merovingian age? In order to get a broad view on the different aspects of Christian thinking on warfare, the chapter deals firstly with some core figures and ideas of Christian thinking. It then focuses on the antagonism between Christianity and the world of war, as this appears in the Christian tradition.
