Abstract

There is a quite general consensus that the 200 years long period of Western domination of the world is coming to an end and a new multipolar world is emerging. Today’s multipolar world is, however, fundamentally different from the past multipolar world prevailing up to World War II. China’s rise in recent years as a major power is the main causal factor behind the global transformation towards multipolarity. There are certain important tendencies that are clearly discernible in the early phase of the new multipolar world order. These include: return of the nation state, spread of war to many parts of the world and rising fears of war everywhere, downgrading of ecological concerns, and cultural reassertion by the hitherto suppressed but surviving non-western civilizations.
