Abstract
This is the second volume in the four-volume edition of The Works of Lucy Hutchinson, under the general editorship of David Norbrook; like the first – Hutchinson’s Translation of Lucretius – it is an exemplary work of editorial scholarship. Still to come in the edition are Hutchinson’s memoir of her husband, The Life of Colonel John Hutchinson, and her biblical long poem, Order and Disorder, to be published with her shorter poems. With Volumes I and II now published, this edition accords an unprecedented degree of scholarly attention to a woman writer of the early modern period. Three key works are presented in Volume II: selections from Hutchinson’s Theological Notebook (edited by David Norbrook), which include notes from Calvin’s Institutes, statements of faith, and reflections on matters of doctrinal orthodoxy, such as ‘Arguments to prooue the Scripture the word of God’ and ‘The loue of God’;...
