Abstract

In November 1998, the Working Families Party, organized with significant support from a number of unions, gained ballot access as an independent party in New York State by polling over 50,000 votes for its gubernatorial candidate. The party, formed to challenge the Democratic Party's unresponsiveness to working people, seeks to organize members and voters on a grass-roots basis. The goal is to shift the political debate to address economically populist issues too often neglected by the Democratic Party, including raising the minimum wage, passing living-wage ordinances, and improving workers' compensation.
