Abstract
1. We investigated the fatigue and brittle fracture of heavily loaded dies. A relationship between the standard properties determined in static tests and the resistance of the steel to cyclic loading was found only under certain conditions. 2. Comparison of different steels in terms of test results is permissible only if they have the same structure, amount and distribution of excess carbide, amount and extent of strain hardening of retained austenite, etc. 3. A qualitative estimate of the working capacity of die steels can be made in terms of bending strength and yield strength in compression.
