Abstract

SUMMARY. The ecological conditions are described and breeding data are given for an area on the western shores of the Red Sea, where the annual rainfall comes in winter and most of the breeding takes place in winter and early spring. A local population of Sphenorynchus abdimii does not migrate south in the autumn but breeds in eastern Eritrea in winter. Comparison is drawn between the breeding season in eastern Kritrea and breeding seasons in other semi‐arid areas where data have been compiled, particularly central and western Eritrea, Darfur and Timbuktu‐Chad.
