Abstract

To the Editor:— Vision is a chemical process and, though rapid, it takes time. It takes 1/10 of a second from visual impression of danger to application of one's foot to the brake pedal. If at the crucial moment the retinal image is burned out by a flash of light from your car's windshield wiper, much might happen at 60 mph. (88 ft/sec) in that 1/10 of a second. The National Traffic Safety Agency has recommended that nonreflective surfaces be used on windshield wiper arms on cars built after 1968, but a lot can happen before then. For the interim, I have a suggestion, something I've been doing for years: Get a can of flat black enamel and an inexpensive child's watercolor brush.
