Abstract
(Reg Anesth Pain. Med 2016;41:405) Two of the most effective methods used for providing intrapartum pain relief are epidural analgesia and combined spinal-epidural analgesia. Some of the advantages that spinal analgesia has over epidural analgesia include more rapid onset, a definitive endpoint for placement, usage of lower doses of local anesthetic/opioid, and superior sacral coverage. A continuous spinal analgesia technique offers the advantages of being able to prolong the duration of intrathecal analgesia, titrate the dose to effect, and rapidly convert a labor analgesic to a surgical anesthetic in case of a cesarean delivery.
