Abstract

The Wigner transform provides a reformulation of quantum mechanics in terms of classical concepts. We present some properties of the Wigner transform of the density matrix which justify its interpretation as the quantum-mechanical analog of the classical phasespace distribution function. Considering some applications, we demonstrate that the Wigner distribution function serves as a good starting point for semi-classical approximations to properties of the (nuclear) manybody system.
