Abstract
Leprosy is a disease not only defined by its historical prominence, but by the continued enigma surrounding aspects of its pathogenesis. Despite advances in effective multidrug regimes, the disease continues to be a major cause of infection-associated morbidity within countries where it remains endemic. Leprosy is rare in Australia, with cases primarily arising in persons from endemic countries or Indigenous Australians, the latter bearing a notable burden of the disease. The number of new leprosy cases within Australia in 2020 was four.
