Abstract

To trust a poet does not at all mean take seriously every word he utters. When Iaroslav Smeliakov, in his Talks About Poetry [Razgovory o poezii], says decisively, my coarse verse, he is far from the truth. Lines that come from his pen are preeminently gentle and compassionate. Sometimes this gentleness is concealed - and nevertheless emphasized! - by a deliberately severe tone; and sometimes it speaks out frankly and trustingly. But whether Smeliakov is angry - I shall write no verse for all sorts of nonsense… - or whether he writes compositions full of love and wonder to the sweet and beautiful girls of Russia, his poetry is strong, above all, in its sympathy, its ability establish spiritual contact with people.
