Abstract

This chapter describes the WHO Global Strategy for the Prevention and Control of NCDs that was endorsed by the World Health Assembly in 2000. It describes the three objectives of the WHO Global Strategy, i.e. mapping the burden of NCDs, their determinants and trends in order to guide policy and programming; reducing the levels of exposure of individuals and populations to the above risk factors and their determinants; and strengthening health care for people with NCDs through cost-effective interventions. The chapter explains that the WHO Global Strategy urged WHO Member States to develop government-led multisectoral policy frameworks for NCDs and their risk factors; establish programmes for NCD prevention and control; scale up prevention, treatment and care, ensure that their health care systems are providing equitable access to cost-effective interventions; and share their experiences in order to build the capacity to develop, implement and evaluate NCD prevention and control programmes.
