Abstract

ABSTRACT François Sagat is a white French porn star known primarily for acting in Arab roles in French/American porn and for his later crossovers into arthouse films, music videos, and the world of fashion. This article analyzes the breadth of Sagat’s career to understand what factors, contexts, and stylings have made his many crossovers possible. I argue, in contrast to the existing critical literature on François Sagat, that his whiteness is the position from which he is granted both racial and professional crossover potential. Specifically, Sagat’s career trajectory depends on an image of him as having an interiority racialized as white and gendered feminine and an exteriority racialized as Arab/other and gendered masculine. I trace the steady construction of this anatomy and figuration through close readings of his pornography, his starring roles in films for Christophe Honoré and Bruce LaBruce, and the existing critical literature on his career.
