Abstract

Investigations into maternity services at Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust and mental health services in Essex are a further two examples of negligence which have caused death or serious harm to patients. Reports into Shrewsbury's maternity services indicate an ‘atmosphere of fear’ which had been growing for almost two decades. The arrogant and bullying manner in which some services are being managed demonstrates a serious issue in how parts of the NHS are being run. John Finch, a freelance journalist specialising in the law and ethics relating to healthcare, explains his stance on the bullying nature which has sadly become engrained among certain healthcare services. He believes that bullies within the management of the NHS should hold some level of responsibility for the increasing statistics of patient harm, as well as for the callous manner in which they try to avoid the responsibility for deficiencies in the system that they are in charge of.
