Abstract

Abstract This chapter presents a historical survey of the wh-functional domain, which is closely related to the FDC. The chapter is concerned with the range of different structures which are used to perform similar functions to that of ‘wh-complements’ (or indirect questions). Embedded indirect questions are only a late development in Babylonian. We do not have enough material to draw a picture of the Old Akkadian situation, but even in the Old Babylonian period, only the very beginning of indirect questions is evident. Whereas finite complements became widespread already in the Old Babylonian period (as we have seen), embedded questions only fully developed in the latest period of the language, Neo-Babylonian.
