Abstract

The wetting of ceramic by liquid metals is one of the most important phenomena during processing metal matrix composite material. The wettability of TiCx substrate by the liquid Ti-Al alloys with 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 wt. % Al was studied using the sessile drop method at 1758 K in an Ar atmosphere. The results show that the initial angle decrease from 110° to 80° with increases of Al, and the final equilibrium angle are lower than 10°and slightly depend on the contents of Al. The diffusion of carbon or titanium between Ti-Al alloy and TiCx substrate and interfacial reaction promote the wettability.
