Abstract

Wetting influences the sealing mechanisms of rotary shaft lip seals and rod seals. This article, published in two parts, shows how to determine the surface free energy of sealing materials, especially elastomers. Wetting parameters and their influence on sealing operation are explained, and a hypothesis is proposed to connect wetting phenomena with hydrodynamics.
