Abstract

The Western Union defence Organisation (WUDO), was a military body created within the Brussels Treaty in September 1948. Field Marshal Mont‐gomery was appointed Chairman of the Commanders‐inChief Committee and headquarters were established at Fontaine‐bleau. The creation of this organisation by the democracies in Western Europe contributed to support in Washington for a Western defence alliance incor‐porating the USA. WUDO became redundant with the for‐mation of NATO. The following article, based on a lecture delivered by the Field Marshal at the RUSI on 12 October 1949, is reproduced from the November 1949 issue of the RUSI Journal. After describing the Organisation's genesis and the foundations of its committee and command structures, the Field Marshal concludes with a list of ‘Require‐ ments for Success’ which remain as relevant today for current and future multi‐national formations.
