Abstract

Seymour Martin Lipset is Hazel Professor of Public Policy at George Mason University and a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. His many books include Political Man: The Social Bases of Politics (1960) and American Exceptionalism: A Double-Edged Sword (forthcoming). This article draws on portions of an essay published in A New Moment in the Americas, edited by Robert S. Leiken (North-South Center and Transaction Publishers, 1994).
