Abstract
Free radical biology has always been a topic of interest for the readership of the Biochemical Journal and has attracted articles from aspiring and established leaders in this field over the last 30 years. Among the most highly cited articles in the Biochemical Journal in this field have been those that have described the interactions between two of the most important free radicals in biological systems, nitric oxide (NO) and superoxide (O2•−). This latest Biochemical Journal Classics article highlights three papers and one review published between 1989 and 1994 which described in detail the differential regulation of nitric oxide synthases in response to inflammation, formation of oxidants from the simultaneous generation of NO and O2•−, and the release of both radicals in activated neutrophils. The studies emanated from one of the most attractive and productive research sites in the pharmaceutical industry: Wellcome Research Laboratories (WRL), Beckenham, Kent, where I was a research scientist from 1985 to 1995.
