Abstract

Though air is a pervasive and powerful agent existing all around us, a serious understanding of how air (and gases in general) behave came about only in the seventeenth century. This involved the collective efforts of several people, and especially of Jan Baptista van Helmont (1580–1644) from Belgium, Otto von Guericke (1602–1686) from Germany, Evangelista Torricelli (1608–1647) from Italy, and Blaise Pascal (1623–1662) from France.
