Abstract

This essay provides a thematic overview of Ronald Reagan's weekly radio addresses and discusses the primary functions of the speeches. It divides the talks into seven categories: General Defense of the Administration, Domestic Issues, Foreign Policy, Defense Policy, Social Issues, Apodeictic, and Campaign Rhetoric. Furthermore, the essay suggests that these addresses fulfilled five functions: Creating Public Support, Reassuring the Public, Agenda Setting, Role Definition, and Self-Defense. Finally, the essay draws implications for understanding the rhetorical strategies and ideology of Ronald Reagan.
