Abstract

A mechanism which causes the wear of the harder material in a friction couple is presented. The mechanism acts through some geometrical relations on the microscopic scale between asperities on the two materials. A statistical relation between these geometries leads to the probability of the failure of the harder asperity, which on a macroscopic scale is inversely proportional to the service life duration of the harder part.
