A ' of the behavior of the elements in the stars is given. Absolute-magnitude effects are evident for atoms of Na I, Ca I, Sr ii, and Ba n. The increase of intensity of Cb I in the giants is considerable. The effect of high- and low-excitation potentials is evident for atoms of Mg I, Cr I, Cr U, Mn I, Fe I, Co I, and Ni I. The behavior of La II and the singly ionized rare earths can be explained as either an absolute-magnitud effect or an excess of these atoms in the atmosphere of a Bootis. La ii, then Eit ii and Nd U, show the greatest increase in the giants.
