Abstract

This new Abrams publication is a magnificent volume, depicting the West from about 1820 to the 1930s. The West means many things: mountains, prairies, deserts, natural wonders; fauna and flora; buffalo and cattle; cowboys, outlaws, violence; Indians in their full glory and their native culture, and their conflict with the invaders; stagecoaches, railroads, settlements; inexorable progress, and the disappearance of the old West. The artists who painted these aspects or created sculpture to evoke them varied greatly in skill and aesthetic competence. They range from the virtually unknown, through artists like Audubon, Bierstadt, or Remington, to Thomas Hart Benton. The illustrations in this book are for the most part in excellent color. We see the historical development: the pictures are categorized according to topic and time, so that we get an overview of what actually happened to the West.
