Abstract

Commander of the AMISOM force in Somalia, General Nathan Mugisha, argues that the African Union mission in Somalia has made significant progress toward fulfilling its mandate. But there are problems – not least the lack of manpower and materiel – which impede its ability to counter the Al-Shabaab insurgency. As fears rise over the push of Al-Qa'ida into the Horn, more needs to be done to support the Transitional Federal Government and stabilise Somalia.
