Abstract

In a classic work, Wannier derived on the basis of classical mechanics and statistical arguments, the threshold behavior of the cross-section for ionization of atoms by electron impact. This review article discusses the work done by him and since in extending the analysis to quantum mechanics and the status of experimental results on threshold escape of two electrons from a positive ion. The central ideas of the Wannier theory are shown to have very broas implications for our understanding of the dynamics of electron-electron interactions in the presence of an ionic field. Even further, the Wannier theory is shown to be relevant for the description of highly correlated motion in varied physical situations.
