Abstract
A technique has been developed to measure the volume changes which accompany the wetting of solids by liquids. The method is based on precision density measurements of the solids immersed in the liquids. The results are expressed in terms of a surface excess mass of liquid. The volumetric behavior of five n-alkanes and of cyclohexane at the Graphon/ liquid interface has been investigated. The surface excesses of the n-alkanes are positive relative to cyclohexane. For tetradecane, hexadecane, and octodecane the surface excesses increase sharply as the freezing point is approached.
