Abstract

Measurements of the molar volume VM and the thermal expansion coefficient alpha p were made by the pycnometer method for liquid-Hg-based alloys containing Na (up to 14.38 at.%) in the temperature range from liquidus (or 278 K) to 473 K. The experimental results of VM are nearly constant in the above range of concentration so that the excess molar volume VMex has negative values varying linearly with concentration. However, a small but distinctive hump was found in the concentration dependence curve of alpha p around 5 at.% Na showing a tendency of linear increase with the addition of Na. This anomalous behavior of alpha p seems to arise from the higher-order correlation function effects pointed out by present authors.
