Abstract

This chapter is all about the connection between audience and presenter. Starting with an explanation of why radio stations have such specific target audiences from audio strategist Matt Deegan, it features the answers from a range of industry figures to the question ‘what makes a great presenter?’ On a more literal level, this chapter looks at what constitutes a ‘good’ voice on radio and provides tips on how to develop one from broadcast coach, Kate Lee. Preparation and production are touched upon before a detailed outline of how presenters work with scripts to best effect. In-depth guidance is given to the writing of programme scripts, especially when they are to be read by someone else. The chapter concludes with interviews about two distinctive radio products with a clear target audience: Fun Kids and BBC Minute.
