The problem that is failed most often among the 20 reasoning problems in the Otis Arithmetic Reasoning Test1 is this:If a stick 20 inches long is cut into two pieces so that one piece is 2/3 as long as the other, how long will the longer piece be?In order to best understand this article, you should stop just long enough now to work this problem. You might time yourself while you solve and check the solution. (You may use paper and pencil if you wish.) What answer did you get? The most common answer is 13⅓ inches, which of course is wrong. If you get that for an answer, you did not cheek your work. You might look at your watch and try again.
