Abstract

Measurements have been made of the lifetime and absolute values of the Einstein spontaneous radiation probabilities for the 4S3/2-4I15/2 visible fluorescence of erbium in yttrium gallium garnet. These have allowed an estimate to be made of the fluorescence efficiency of this transition and of the value of the phonon contribution to the transition rate. Evidence to support the theory that the phonon process involves five phonons is given.
