Abstract

This article suggests a new interpretation of the meaning and purpose of The Education of Henry Adams . The Education is Adams's last effort to come to grips with a concept he had pursued throughout his career as a historian: the American national character. His inability to explain the link between national character and historical evolution led Adams to judge his lifelong quest for "education" a failure.
