A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty. —Winston ChurchillIs it better to be a pessimist or an optimist? At first glance, pessimistic people might seem to have at least one advantage: expecting the worst, they should be disappointed less frequently than optimists. Yet this is inaccurate. In fact, pessimists tend to be disappointed considerably more frequently than optimists. There are a number of misconceptions about these two very different approaches to life that warrant examination.
