Abstract

Abstract This chapter provides a detailed look at the local dynamics of one Yemeni city, Taiz, with central importance to Yemen's civil war. The chapter finds that when viewed from the ground, narratives about proxy wars between the U.S., Saudi Arabia, and Iran fail to reflect the conflicts occurring at the local level. At the same time, the chapter argues that appeals to framings of Yemen's civil war as a proxy conflict can provide benefits for the belligerents while making efforts to achieve peace more difficult.
