Abstract

Abstract Infrared spectra were recorded for CH 3 OOCH 3 , CD 3 OOCD 3 and CF 3 OOCF 3 both in the gas phase and in Ar matrix. Raman spectra were recorded for CH 3 OOCH 3 , CD 3 OOCD 3 and (CH 3 ) 3 COOC(CH 3 ) 3 in the liquid phase. With the exception of the torsional modes all fundamentals have been observed for CH 3 OOCH 3 and CD 3 OOCD 3 and an assignment is suggested. It is shown that the O-O stretching vibrations in CH 3 OOCH 3 , CD 3 OOCD 3 and (CH 3 ) 3 COOC(CH 3 ) 3 occur at 779, 713 and 769 cm −1 , respectively, and hence, do not fall within the range of 820–890 cm −1 generally accepted for this mode in aliphatic peroxides.
