Abstract

Glow Discharge Optical Emission Spectroscopy (GDOES) has become a very popular analytical technique for the determination of element concentrations in bulk material and coatings with a thickness in the micrometer range. The better understanding of the fundamentals, the design of the source and the control of the technique evolved into a step by step improvement towards thin film and surface analysis. The state-of-the-art of GDOES is presented on a variety of topics in steel research going from special applications of bulk analysis up to surface and thin film analysis to support industrial activities.
