Abstract
This paper examines Herodotus’ use of verba dicendi as a narrative device. Investigating the application of verba dicendi in historiography, one of the earliest products of Greek prose, may teach us about the evolving conventions of this genre and help us detect its development and its divergence from Homer, as well as trace semantic developments across genres and periods. This paper focuses on the verb katalegein, a frequently applied verb of speaking in Homer and Herodotus, and refers to recent studies in literary, narratological, and linguistic aspects in ancient Greek historiography.
