Abstract The velocity dispersion in the local galaxy field, whose value is given as less than 4000 km/sec, is determined by means of the galaxies in the Revised Shapley-Ames redshift catalog. A study of velocity differences among neighboring pairs of galaxies yields a one-dimensional velocity dispersion of 70 + or - 10 km/sec, which is in addition found to hold among pairs of galaxies irrespective of their isolation or whether they are each other's nearest neighbors. In light of these results, the interpretation of isolated galaxy pairs as binaries whose dynamics is dominated by the two-body force is questioned. Among the implications of the derived velocity dispersion considered, attention is given to the value's significance in the virialization process occurring in the cores of the great clusters of galaxies.
