Abstract
Objectives: To describe an intracranial anatomical variant; the occipitotemporal vein (Vein of Labbe) and its relevance to ear surgery. Methods: (1) Description of a case report of a 13- month-old male with acute coalescent mastoiditis and a subperiosteal abscess. The patient was presumed to have epidural abscess on preoperative CT scan. However, no abscess was found at surgery. (2) Review of the medical literature. Results: Based on the surgical findings and review of the medical literature it becomes evident that the radiological misdiagnosis is due to a vascular variant: the occipitotemporal vein (Vein of Labbe). Conclusion: Recognition of the Vein of Labbe on CT scan is essential in the management of otologic and neurotologic disease.
