Abstract
The metal (0001) basal faces of hexagonal (wurtzite) modifications of both zinc oxide and cadmium sulfide are shown to vaporize at higher rates than the nonmetal (0001̄) faces. The difference in rates has been measured for cadmium sulfide as a function of temperature. Surface morphologies also differ between opposite basal faces of both kinds of crystals. The data suggest that desorption may be rate limiting.
