Abstract
The Cr-Co alloy, at low molar fraction values, is a very interesting material to use as perpendicular magnetic recording films. For a better understanding of the origin of the anisotropy, measurements on single crystal samples should be made. In this paper we will discuss the growth of single crystals of Co and Cr elements and solid solutions of fixed compositions by means of the closed tube chemical vapour transport technique. Our attention was focused on the fcc and hcp phases, which are the only structures of interest for device applications. In order to define the growth conditions, a thermodynamical study of the Cr x Co 1−x −I 2(with 0⩽ x ⩽ 0.25) system was undertaken. The behaviour of the gaseous species and transport conditions are discussed as a function of temperature and alloy composition.
