Abstract

The justification of demands made by the scientific community to government for public resources to support science has to be made in terms of 'the value of scientific research' – Whatever the criteria given to 'value'. This has become a central issue in science policy at the present time, of inescapable importance to scientific research funded in the UK through the University Grants Committee (UGC) and the research councils. BY the provocative adjective 'useless' I mean, of ecourse, science that is not orientated towards wealth creation and hence does not have utility as its prime motivation.
