Abstract

The effect of wide-field irradiation on the blood platelet level is described, and it is suggested that the blood platelet level is a more reliable indicator of the effect of radiation on the bone marrow than the total white cell count. By using the blood platelet level in this manner it is possible to avoid altogether the production of partial or permanent marrow failure. The use of the platelet level in the planning of treatment is described. The relationship between the development of petechial haemorrhages and radiation-induced thrombocytopenia is discussed.
