Abstract
This article presents the author’s research that investigates the intersection between the motivations and interests of the urban exploration community and formal heritage significance, as more commonly prescribed by heritage professionals. The article considers how non-mainstream experiences can challenge accepted definitions of heritage, particularly those related to understanding, valuing and engagement; with important implications for audience engagement and diversification.
