Abstract

In this short overview the value of the horse and equine science for the past and present society is described. First the domestication of the horse is described, than the impact of horse breeding on Bronze Age society and its subsequent development till the industrial revolution is summarized. Next, the significance of the horse and its diseases for comparative medicine is discussed and finally the value of the horse for sustainable farming and for the wellbeing of the postmodern man is described.
