Abstract

Flash visually evoked potentials (FVEPs) were utilized as an indicator of visual function of stimulus deprivation amblyopia. Comparing the VEP amplitude between amblyopia and healthy eye of unilateral congenital cataracts, an amplitude ratio Amblyopia/Healthy (A/H) below 0.54 suggests eccentric viewing and poor visual acuity. An amplitude ratio above 0.73 is an indication for foveal fixation and relatively good visual acuity. Pattern VEPs (PVEPs) were utilized as an indicator of foveal and/or parafoveal visual function. There was a significant reduced amplitude ratio (A/H) at the small check size of 12' in anisometropic amblyopia. Both FVEPs and PVEPs could be used as indicators of foveal and/or extrafoveal visual function in paediatric cataracts.
