Abstract

Patient engagement is a key focus of the current NHS ( NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement, 2006 ). In this article, Hannah Middleton, Marian O’Connor and Tracey Tyrrell describe an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) open information event that took place at St Mark’s Hospital, organised by the IBD patient panel and the IBD team. The agenda was agreed at patient panel meetings and with the help of pharmaceutical sponsorship, it was well-publicised and attended by 160 people. At the event, delegates were given general information on IBD, current medical and surgical treatment options and specific IBD services at St Mark’s. They also had an opportunity to meet staff, the patient panel and representatives of patient groups, including Crohn’s and Colitis UK and the Crohn’s in Childhood Research Association (CICRA). The event was extremely well-received, with 100% of attendees reporting it to have been beneficial. This highlights the influence that patients and members of the public can have on service improvement.
