Abstract

For this study of the reliability and the differential validity of the Landis ego boundary scores vis-à-vis traditional Rorsohach scores, the protocols of 48 male undergraduates at Harvard College were scored for percept boundaries, movement, and content. Results were contrary to the Landis hypothesis that the permeable and impermeable scores represent opposite polarities of a hypothetical continuum of ego boundary concepts. The ratio of Total Permeable to Total Impermeable responses is closely approximated by the ratio of Fluid to Clothing + Vista responses and is very similar to the ratio of Klopfer's m to H scores. The ratio of Total Permeable to Total Impermeable, rather than assessing ego boundary types, compares the frequency of inanimate movement to static-or-moving human beings. The future study of ego boundaries requires a revised operationalization and a repeated estimate of reliability and differential validity.
